Lander is the county seat of Fremont County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,867. Lander is located in central Wyoming, along the Popo Agie River. A tourism center that has several dude ranches nearby, it is located a few miles from the Wind River Indian Reservation.
Recreational camping and wilderness treks are a major tourist attraction in Lander. Visitors and adventure seekers can check in with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Headquarters, or one of the local businesses, to be outfitted. River trips, horseback rides, and nationally recognized rock climbing areas are also featured recreations in Lander. Annual rodeos can be seen as well, featuring shows and competitions when in season. It is a local rumor that Lander built the first commercial rodeo in the nation.
